Hypertension and the Brain as an End-Organ Target

Hypertension and the Brain as an End-Organ Target [recurso electrónico] / edited by Hélène Girouard. - XIX, 221 p. 24 illus., 20 illus. in color. online resource.

A systematic review of reviews to examine the association between hypertension and cognitive impairments in adults -- Hypertension and age-related cognitive decline -- Hypertension and stroke -- Neuroimaging as a research tool in human essential hypertension -- Cognitive Dysfunction and Dementia in animal models of hypertension -- The effects of hypertension on cerebral artery structure and function, and cerebral blood flow -- Arterial stiffness and the brain -- Endothelium, the blood-brain barrier, and hypertension -- Hypertension and brain inflammation: role of RAS-induced glial activation -- Sex differences in neural regulation of hypertension.

The first comprehensive overview of the effects ofhypertension on the brain. The book discusses not only the relationship betweenhypertension and stroke, but also the much less studied relationshipbetween hypertension and cognitive decline and neurodegenerativediseases such as Alzheimer's. It seeks to answer two important questions. First, what are the conditions under which hypertension is associated with stroke, cognitivedecline, and neurodegenerative disease? And second, what are thebiological mechanisms by which hypertension alters brain homeostasis? By looking at the biological mechanisms ofthese relationships, this book provides insight to neuroscientists andneurologists regarding why anti-hypertension treatments make a bigdifference in the case of stroke, but have very little impact on cognitivedecline and brain aging.
