Il volume ripercorre la storia del volo, soffermandosi sui personaggi che ne hanno caratterizzato le tappe principali. Partendo dal mito e dalle leggende, vengono proposti i primi, folli, precursori che senza alcun fondamento tecnico e scientifico sperimentano ali di stoffa e legno nel goffo tentativo di imitare la natura. La narrazione scorre lungo un duplice binario: la conquista dell’aria attraverso il “più pesante dell’aria”, e quella attraverso il “più leggero”; in altre parole, mongolfiere e aeroplani, due modi di concepire la via delle nuvole. Il volume tratteggia i concetti,e le intuizioni, che sono stati alla base di questi differenti approcci e la loro relativa evoluzione nel corso dei secoli. Facendo uso di ampia aneddotica, il volume propone le figure dei protagonisti calandoli nel contesto storico cui appartenevano, fino ad arrivare all’alba dell’era moderna e alla Seconda Guerra Mondiale. |
