He studied the Degree in Spanish Language and Literature, the Master's Degree in Spanish Letters, and the Doctorate in Hispanic Linguistics at the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the National Autonomous University of Mexico. He was a researcher and teacher of Spanish linguistics and philology at the Institute of Philological Research and the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, respectively. Within the National Autonomous University of Mexico, he held the management positions of the Foreign Language Teaching Center, the Foreigners Teaching Center, and the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters. He was also secretary of the Association of Linguistics and Philology of Latin America, and director of the National Library of Mexico. Died August 02, 2013 Mexico City)

In 1999, the Kingdom of Spain awarded him the Great Cross of Alfonso X El Sabio, recognition that rewards merits in the area of education, science, culture, teaching and research. In 2003 he received the National University Award, from the National Autonomous University of Mexico, in Humanities Research. In 2008 he received the National Prize of Sciences and Arts, maximum recognition of the Government of the Mexican Republic, in the area of Linguistics and Literature. He devoted much of his research to the study of phonology and phonetics, semantics, language contact, dialectology and Hispanic philology.
